Built to commemorate Scotland's famous War of Independence culminating in the spectacular victory by King Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314 against the forces of Edward II of England, The Braveheart Centre is also a fine tribute to Scotland's other national hero, William Wallace, who resisted the English forces until his cruel betrayal, torture and execution in 1305, as portrayed in the now famous film 'Braveheart'.

Wallace was the first Scottish hero to give his people a sense of national, rather than fuedal, loyalty and it was he more than anyone who lit the torch of Scottish Independence in the 13th Century.

Wallace was appointed Guardian of Scotland in 1298, a position he held for less tan a year, yet in that short time he was already taking steps to democratise the feudal system, centuries ahead of his time. Enjoy our short film devoted to this period.

Another Scottish hero, the national bard Robert Burns, has also obtained world wide renown as a true democrat; visitors can also view a short section devoted to the poet.

Visitors may also follow the epic journey made by Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1745. His story will take you from his exile in France through the horrors of the battle of Culloden and then his final escape to freedom aided by the romantic 'Highland Heroine' Flora MacDonald. His travels are illustrated throughout the centre by various works of art, most of which are from a series by the artist KJ Campbell specially commissioned to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the campaign.
